The Kaikōura Golf Course.
The Course.
Kaikōura is a popular tourist destination in New Zealand, and if you’re a golf enthusiast, you’ll be delighted to know that our club’s links course is open for play all year round. Our course offers a leisurely pace of golfing without the pressure you’ll find at busy city courses.
Situated 5 minutes south of the township, the Kaikōura Golf Club is an 18-hole course of some 5352 metres (5853 yards) set in front of one of the most spectacular mountain backdrops one could wish to see.
Established in April 1911 as a 9-hole course the Club has undergone many changes over more than a century.
Although short in comparison to many modern designs, don’t let this mislead you into thinking the course is easy. Looks can be deceiving and even the most proficient golfer will enjoy the challenges.
The irrigated fairways, at face value, are generously wide in most cases, but the nature of the greens, small and strategically shaped, means approach shots must be precise to ensure against getting into trouble. Once on the green you will find reading the surface contours is not easy and often the break will be other than what you perceived.
The Course: Hole by Hole

Hole 5 “Mt Fyffe”
Men: Par 5, 471m
Ladies: Par 5, 457m
The first par 5 on the course. The approach presents trees to the right and two large poplars to the left. The narrow green is on 2 levels and a chip shot from the left or right can be difficult.
Hole 6 “Kowhai”
Men: Par 4, 335m
Ladies: Par 4, 300m
A demanding par 4 with Out of Bounds to the left. Missing your shot to the green – left or right- will challenge all golfers’ chipping skills. Sloping green, back to front.

Hole 7 “Burma Road”
Men: Par 5, 470m
Ladies: Par 5, 439m
With trees to the left and right from the tee, opening out to a wide fairway. The green is big and flat. Try not to go long with your approach shot.
Hole 8 “The Gap”
Men: Par 3, 192m
Ladies: Par 3, 154m
A long par 3 – a really tough hole. Get your tee shot through the gap in the trees and a 3 might be on your card. A large flat green awaits you.

Hole 10 “Devil’s Elbow”
Men: Par 4, 345m
Ladies: Par 4, 317m
A slight dog-leg to the right takes you to a demanding green, sloping back to front with run outs to left and right. A 4 is always a good score on this hole.

Hole 11 “Hawi”
Men: Par 5, 423m
Ladies: Par 4, 310m
The third par 5 on the course. A drive up onto the fairway and a good second shot will leave a short approach. There’s a bunker to the right of the small green. You may get a Birdie here.
Hole 12 “Cabbage Tree”
Men: Par 4, 375m
Ladies: Par 5, 375m
Without doubt our Club’s signature hole. There’s a dog-leg to the right, Out of Bounds to the right, trees to the left, not to mention a ‘Lake’. Don’t be distracted by the mountain and sea views from the elevated tee – a big score might result.

Hole 13 “Ludley”
Men: Par 3, 191m
Ladies: Par 3, 157m
Another demanding par 3. A narrow tee shot takes you over the lake with Out of Bounds to the right. The green slopes back to front. 3 is a good score here.

Kaikoura TOP 10 Holiday Park is the gateway to the marine wonderland that is Kaikoura.
Hole 14 “Cornerstone”
Men: Par 4, 373m
Ladies: Par 4, 272m
A very tough par 4. There’s a dog-leg to the right and out of bounds all the way to the green. There are trees to the left. The green slopes left to right and doesn’t offer too many pars.

Hole 15 “Inland”
Men: Par 4, 348m
Ladies: Par 4, 298m
A long par 4 with a dog-leg to the left. Out of Bounds on the right continues all the way to the green. The narrow green is on two levels.
“I would rate holes 12-13-14-15 as the hardest on our course”
Peter Harvey, Club Patron
Hole 16 “Poplar”
Men: Par 5, 472m
Ladies: Par 5, 420m
The last par 5 heading for the Clubhouse. It’s a long hole with trees on the right all the way to the green. There’s a hidden hollow in front of the narrow green. Don’t go long here as the ground runs away to the trees at the back.

Hole 17 “The Crossing”
Men: Par 4, 314m
Ladies: Par 4, 314m
A tight driving hole with trees to the left and right. Make it onto the fairway, through the hollow and onto the large green which slopes from left to right.
